This paper was given as the opening address at the 1970 Albany International Conference on Radiation Effects in Semiconductors, and it attempts to establish a general overview of the field by concentrating on recent research developments and important unanswered questions. The continuing importance of impurity-defect interactions, of microscopic defect identification, and of the necessity for more theoretical calculations are emphasized. The rapid development of the field of ion implantation and its close relationship with radiation effects studies are pointed out. The influence of monomer functionality on the mechanical properties of epoxies is studied using molecular dynamics (MD) with the Reax Force Field (ReaxFF). From deformation simulations, the Young's modulus, yield point, and Poisson's ratio are calculated and analyzed. Comparison between the network structures of distinct epoxies is further advanced by the monomeric degree index (MDI). Experimental validation demonstrates the MD results correctly predict the relationship in Young's moduli. The transverse and longitudinal mechanical properties of aramid fibers like Kevlar? 29 (K29) fibers are strongly linked to their highly oriented structure. Mechanical characterization at the single fiber scale is challenging especially when the diameter is as small as 15 µm. Longitudinal tensile tests on single K29 fibers and single fiber transverse compression test (SFTCT) have been developed. Our approach consists of coupling morphological observations and mechanical experiments with SFTCT analysis by comparing analytical solutions and finite element modeling. New insights on the analysis of the transverse direction response are highlighted. Systematic loading/unloading compression tests enable to experimentally determine a transverse elastic limit. Taking account of the strong anisotropy of the fiber, the transverse mechanical response sheds light on a skin/core architecture. More importantly, results suggest that the skin of the fiber, typically representing a shell of one micrometer in thickness, has a transverse apparent modulus of 0.2 GPa. That is around more than fifteen times lower than the transverse modulus of 3.0 GPa in the core. By comparison, the measured longitudinal modulus is about 84 GPa. The theoretical concept of the computer program is based on the compartment theory for the 3-pool model using single pulse administration of the tracer. The code estimates the model parameters by means of the non-linear method of least squares fit under steady state conditions. Furthermore the parameters of the protein metabolism are calculated. Abstract The molecular theory of dense fluids is progressing rapidly and its extension to mixtures is well underway. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a possibly serious difficulty in comparing experimental Henry's constants with those calculated from theory. The difficulty arises because whereas theorists choose temperature and density as independent variables, experimental equilibrium measurements on mixtures are often made along the saturation line where (at fixed composition) temperature and density are not both independent variables. Lowering of the optical band gap of conjugated polymers in bulk heterojunction solar cells not only leads to an increased absorption but also to an increase of the optimal active layer thickness due to interference effects at longer wavelengths. The increased carrier densities due to the enhanced absorption and thicker active layers make low band gap solar cells more sensitive to formation of space charges and recombination. By systematically red shifting the optical parameters of poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(3′,7′‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐p‐phenylenevinylene] and 6,6‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester, we simulate the effect of a reduced band gap on the solar cell efficiencies. We show that especially the fill factor of low band gap cells is very sensitive to the balance of the charge transport. For a low band gap cell with an active layer thickness of 250 nm, the fill factor of 50% for balanced transport is reduced to less than 40% by an imbalance of only one order of magnitude. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
